I wonder if "some" level of online popularity is ideal:
Too little = no connections around niche interests/hobbies, little scalability if you launch anything, no network to lean on if you need advice
Too much = <insert every problem related to fame>
Some = the right amount/type of connections for your life
E.g. I'm publishing a post-apocalyptic book and have a bunch of interest from people in my audience I've never met. Without that, it'd be hard to get the same early push off the ground with family/friends who don't read this stuff.
